The Department of Physics and Astronomy at BYU is hosting a public lecture series in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium on the first Tuesday of every month as part of the International Year of Astronomy Celebration. The auditorium is located on the west side of the first floor of the library, just to your left as you come down the main stairs, in room 1060. The auditorium opens for seating at 7 pm, with the lecture starting at 7:30 pm and running until 8:30 pm. A short question and answer period then follows the talk until 9 pm. Weather and twilight permitting, the telescopes on top of the Eyring Science Center will be open after the lecture from 8:30 pm to 10 pm for public viewing.

The next talk scheduled for September 1st will be given by Dr. David Neilsen, Assistant Professor of Physics at Brigham Young University. The talk is entitled 'Einstein's Legacy: The Big Bang, Black Holes, and Gravitational Waves'.

Abstract:
Black holes warp the space and time around them, and moving black holes send out waves like ripples on a pond. These gravitational waves carry interesting information about the black holes that created them, and how they were formed. Dr. Neilsen will discuss efforts to detect gravitational waves on earth, and what we can learn from them about black holes, neutrons stars, and the big bang.

Background Information:
Dr. Neilsen graduated from BYU with a Bachelors degree in 1992 and a Masters degree in 1995, both in Physics. He then went on to receive his PhD in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. Dr. Neilsen then took two postdoc positions, the first at UT Austin and the second at Louisiana State University, before returning to join the faculty at BYU in 2004. Dr. Neilsen is married to Tracianne Beesley Neilsen, who also has a PhD in Physics with an emphasis in acoustics, and is a Part—time Assistant Professor at BYU. They are the proud parents of three children.
