Lee Library Auditorium on the first Tuesday of every month as part of the International Year of Astronomy Celebration. The auditorium will open for seating at 7 pm, with the lecture starting at 7:30 pm and running until 8:30 pm. A question and answer period will then follow up until 9 pm. Weather and twilight permitting, the telescopes on top of the Eyring Science Center will be open after the lecture from 8:30 to 10 pm for public viewing.</p><p> The auditorium is located on the first floor of the Harold B. Lee Library in room 1060. Stephens from NASA/AMES Research Center will give a talk entitled 'Astronomy at 41,000 feet: The NASA SOFIA Mission'. The SOFIA mission consists of a 2.5 meter telescope located inside a Boeing 747 airplane that has been specially designed with doors that open at 40,000 feet for the telescope to take observations high in the Earth's stratosphere. Dr. Stephens will talk about the design and operation of the telescope, why you would need to put a telescope on an airplane, and the exciting science that SOFIA will do in the next twenty years.
