• The Hispanic Business Alliance will offer a six-week Entrepreneurship Training and Education program starting each Wednesday from Feb. 13-March 19. The course will be taught by Gary Benson, who has founded or helped to found several entrepreneurial ventures and has run university-based entrepreneurship programs in the U.S. and overseas. Topics to be covered include: finding, developing and protecting new business and product ideas; writing good business plans that work; financing new business ventures; strategies for new startups, buyouts and franchising; and debunking the myths of entrepreneurship. • HMC-La Agency, a Salt Lake City based full-service advertising agency, will host its 3rd annual Marketing to Hispanics conference, "Guerrilla Marketing in addition to advertising". The speakers include Kip Gienau, a guerrilla marketing coach; Jeff Symon, president of Alternative & Innovative Marketing, a marketing and promotions company specializing in the Hispanic market; and Christian Reslen from Alma DDB, a Florida-based advertising company. The Utah Big Business and Technology Expo will be held on March 5-6 at Utah Valley State College. • UVSC's Center for the Study of Ethics will present the Excellence in Business Ethics award to Jeanette Lynton, founder and CEO of Close to My Heart, a Pleasant Grove scrapbooking supplies company. The award is given to individuals who demonstrate strong business ethics through fiscal responsibility, leadership, civic activity, and personal example. Lynton will speak on "Life lessons and Ethical Business Practices" at the annual Kirk Englehardt Business Ethics Award and Lecture. She started her business in 1984 with a few "creative stamps," and has built a line of scrapbooking products and books sold throughout the U.S. and Canada. Numerous awards have been presented to Lynton for her innovative products and business accomplishments. Her most recent award was the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Retail and Distribution area for Utah. As the fourth recipient of the award, Lynton joins past awardees: Professor Patricia Werhane, endowed chair at University of Virginia and DePaul University; President of BYU-Idaho Kim Clark; and international corporate business developer Joel Peterson. •The Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly First Friday Forum on Thursday this month at the Business and Tech Expo.The keynote speaker is Dan Clark, co-author of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" and the newly released "Forgotten Fundamentals" for business.
