I read the article in the Daily Herald regarding volunteering to help monitor your favorite lake in Utah. In our case we live near Utah Lake and boat there often. The article gave this email for volunteering:

We signed up because it sounded like something we'd both love to help out with. This morning we met with someone from the department down at the public dock. We were given a small gizmo to dip in the water to check on clarity. Takes all of 30 seconds to do it. After that we simply write the depth of clarity down on their paper and you are done.
We were there and one other person and they may well have more people doing it. Just thought I'd describe it to you just in case anyone has a favorite lake anywhere in Utah they may want to do this on.
Simple, simple way to feel like the lake you love gets a little love back.

Gotta love the simple little things we can all do. I thought this was a great idea and it is nice to see that the department is utilizing those who have an interest. They said they may expand it to another volunteer program to actually test the waters of any Lake in Utah that boaters utilize. If they do, we will likely volunteer for that as well. I'm lazy but I can give up 30 seconds! lol
It is an interesting idea and I hope it works up and down Utah. The lakes in Utah are spectacular and worth any attention.
