I totally agree with Edith Schlappi's letter to the Daily Herald. She is to be commended for pointing out this kind of mistake on the part of the BYU public relations department.
I sent the following personal letter to AD Holmoe on July 30....
Tom,
I have been a BYU Football Fan for 36 years and even though the team has struggled the last 4 years I thought I saw some nice improvements during this last season. I think that with Bronco's determined coaching effort the team will do even better this year.
Having said that I opened my morning Des News and I see the ad for this up coming season..."Weapons of Mass Destruction"...frankly I was immediately taken back. I like to think I have a good sense of humor and I am not easily offended, but to me that statement was offensive. Anytime we equate a sporting event with war in my mind we are way off base. Now I realize a Pro Football team might want to sensationalize the upcoming season and use something stupid like that...but I don't see Brigham Young University wanting to portray that to their fans, their opponents or the rest of the college football community.
We have young men and women in the armed forces in harms way everyday...they die weekly defending our country...they are our true heroes and for the most part they due their jobs without a lot of hype or fanfare. I just got back from San Diego where my son in law is stationed as a Navy doctor off Coronado Island. He works with the Navy seals stationed there and wife and I were able to see them perform their training exercises as we crossed the bay by ferry one evening. These teams of seals go out in the the ocean on their power rafts and dropped in the ocean about 6 miles from shore about 5:30 PM in the afternoon. The group up and then swim 6 miles back into shore, which takes about 5 hours. This is done in the coldwater in the dark of the night with no bright lights, cheerleaders, fans, TV cameras or reporters watching their every move. These are the guys that prevent the "real" weapons of mass destruction from being used on the United States.
I am excited about the upcoming season and would hope that maybe the BYU public relations office can come up with slogans that are more in keeping with the spirit of true competition.
Hope you had a great summer.

After I sent this letter I have not seen the ad run again in the paper. I did not know there was a billboard...if it is not down now, in my opinion it should be taken down immediately!

It's taking you quite a while. Just get somebody to show you how or flip the coin for you.
It's better to be a cheese-eating surrender monkey than one who gets his opinions mainly from talk radio.
Better talk radio than your wife errrrrr boyfriend, huh Eric.
You have insulted my manhood just because you couldn't flip a coin? You are petty as well as challenged in so many areas. Get some help, Woody.

Agreed. Nice letter. I too am a big BYU fan and find that to be offensive for reasons you stated. I have the added reason that . . . I think BYU's going to struggle this year, and the ad campaign reminds me of the self mass destruction we usually have to endure (i.e. last year's BYU/Utah disaster).

Is it just me who is bothered by the BYU football billboard advertisements? The advertisement pictures a side view of the offensive lineman set and ready with the words "Weapons of Mass Destruction." I am a fan of BYU football; however I found this advertisement distasteful.

Good grief...sniveling over this?! Although not a BYU fan in the least, the billboard gives the Cougars something to strive for...it may take awhile...well years maybe to be a force to recon with.
