Jobs which illegal immigrants take are not necessarily those which "Americans don't want to do," but possibly those jobs which Americans are not permitted to do. One of my teenage boys, not having a job, went with a friend to a "day labor store." He and his friend did receive jobs for two days cleaning a warehouse with a group of Hispanic migrants. I have heard accounts like this one many times. Even in the fields picking fruit. I have heard of times that US citizens are threatened not to work because according to these people "they are going to teach the farmers a few things"
The hard fact still remains that these people not only steal the jobs, they steal our identity. In a past article California relates the illegal immigrants to past German immigrants. The part that he leaves out and the part that is different is how the German immigrants got here and how they did not steal identification.
The consumer can help. you can choose to spend your money where you know the companies that hire obey the laws. If you are building a house. Take a good look at your subcontractors and their crews.
It would be great if there was labor enforcement authorities that these instances could be reported to. The employer should be made aware that they have employees that are threatening other employees.

Many young men in Utah would gladly work in the heat hauling and toting. The will to work among our youth has not changed.
The rest of the discussion aside, I don't agree on this point. I'm sure that there are still young men willing to work, but they are far fewer in number than they used to be. For a lot of young men these days there is a sense of entitlement; they want to be the CEO first. A lot of the ones that do end up in blue collar jobs are poorly motivated, often missing work days or filling their shift with "smoke breaks" that somehow count as work time. They take no pride in their work, but rather feel that showing up for it is worth half the days' pay. Legal or not, I've seen Mexicans on construction sites do work that the boys from the burbs would never do.

When they showed up for the third day, my son and his friend were told in broken English that these jobs were for "their people" and that an "accident" might happen to them at the work site.
I had an illegal alien women pull that "could be very bad for me" line once. When I got in her face and told her that threatening me "would be very bad" for her she got the idea and shut up.

I can't really comment on whether or not the will to work is still alive and well as it used to be. I think it has some truth to it at least. Definitely for some, maybe not as true for others. I watched Meet the Press with Tim Russert yesterday. It's one of my regular shows each week. I like Tim and feel like he's a pretty honest reporter. He was interviewing Pat Buchanan and a Dem. legislator from Iowa, I believe. He was Hispanic and representing the Hispanic Caucaus. I disagree with Buchanan on many, many issues. But he made a great counter-point to the senator's argument that 14% of farm workers are illegal immigrants, 8% of construction workers were illegal immigrants, 5% of hospitality workers are illegal immigrants, etc...The guy's point was how essential the illegals in this country are and how they're doing the jobs that "Americans won't do." Buchanan came back with, "Yes, well that means 86% of farm workers are Americans, 92% of construction workers are Americans, 5% of hospitality workers are Americans, etc..." So the argument that these illegal folks are "doing the jobs that Americans won't do," is pretty much invalid. I was eating at McDonald's 2 weeks ago with my wife and niece. As we sat there, we realized that all but 1 employee was Hispanic, and that the overhead music was a Spanish channel. Slowly, these places are being taken over by Hispanic workers. Soon, it won't be that young Americans don't have the will to work. It will be that there is nowhere for them to work.
