Saving on textbooks 1 Year, 1 Month ago Karma: 0
A new bill is trying to be passed for a $4.7 million tax break on text books in higher education. This new idea would save an average of fifty dollars annually for each student. I think this is a great idea but honestly, in the long run how much is fifty dollars really going to affect a student? I know many college students are short on money and would enjoy this.

College Students Seek to Eliminate Textbook Tax

College students are hoping to eliminate sales taxes on their text books. The Coalition of Higher Education for Affordable Textbooks is pitching the idea to state lawmakers ahead of the 2008 session.
The proposal is asking for a $4.7 million tax break.

More than a dozen other states have been successful with the initiative, and this is the first time in Utah that students have joined in the cause to support the bill. The hope is that with money saved from increasing textbook costs _ which could amount to about $90 a year per student _ students could take additional courses each semester and finish a degree sooner than expected.

College students are taking another jab at the rising costs of getting a degree, by backing a proposal to cut tax on textbooks.

The Coalition of Higher Education for Affordable Textbooks pitched the idea on Capitol Hill Wednesday, aiming to exempt sales tax on textbook sales. A formal bill, sponsored by Rep. Greg Hughes, R-Draper, will go before lawmakers in the 2008 session.

Capitalism at work. You've gotta love it. I hope everyone who was in favor of vouchers is against any government involvement in free enterprise and therefore be against this bill. People who were against vouchers should be for this bill. If you talk the talk, then walk the walk.
