Too bad the Utah Highway Patrol fumbled an opportunity to come clean with citizens about the use of force during traffic stops -- specifically regarding the use of Tasers. Relations between law enforcement and the public were not enhanced when a Utah Highway Patrol trooper zapped a motorist. In fact, the more this incident is discussed, the more questions arise about the behavior of the trooper. Read more...

I will make this clear and simple. The police, including the highway patrol are not our friends. They are a part of government, and do what they are told. The Federal government is trying to militarize all police agencies in preperation for control for upcoming events where conceivably we the people would rise up in protest of the illegal and unConstitutional actions. They are testing the waters to see what they can get away with. See how quickly this officer was cleared of any wrongdoing for using his taser? More and more cases of officers using tasers to subue citizens have been popping up, when there has been no need to use them. The police do some good, but they have no real obligation to protect us. Their job is to arrest criminals, after the fact. Keep a wary eye on what is going on, and don't rely on them to protect you. You must protect yourself, and your families, for they will not.

I agree totally. This is only part of the loss of the personal rights of our citizens, bit by bit.
On other current threads in this paper, there is a discussion where some have asked, what's the problem with a national ID.
There are those that simply do not understand that we lose our rights when we don't choose to defend them from the predatory system that exists from many quarters around us.

And then, there are those who fear that their own shadow is watching them and that the boogey-man is hiding behind every tree to the point that they are ready to forfeit the ultimate right of life, itself. All cops are evil. Walking through the metal detector at the airport is a plot to get me. Somebody is listening to my phone call right now. Whaddya mean I have to show you my i.d. to get this job? I never carry one. and on and on goes the paranoia.

I think the Herald did a good job of pointing out the obvious in this case.
It had more to do with ego than anything else. Even the traffic stop itself.
And before you label me anti-police, I'm not. My son is an officer and if he behaved this way I would speak out against him as well.
There are many many very good officers in our country. But there are also a lot with ego problems and who think they are above the law. They will not think twice about breaking the law themselves if, in their opinion, they are getting the job done. And when the main group uphold the actions of these officers, it only emboldens them the more.
Too bad.
