Interesting comment. If we were not involved with Iraq right now the terrorists would be doing damage here and Saddam would be killing people at his leasure - as he did for many years because we did not get involved.
The shame is so many American citizens want to complain about the war yet have no real idea what is going on there. You would rather believe what the news portrays then to find out for yourself.
The time to act is now. We need to stop terrorism in it's tracks. This war isn't about being a superpower, it's about setting thing right. As a country Iraq is having a hard time dealing with freedom. Did we do any better the first 50 years? If you think the citizens in Iraq don't appreciate what we've done then you need to go over there and spend some time. Those who lost their power are the ones complaining. Everyone else is glad we're there.Actually, if we were not involved with Iraq, Al Qaeda would have focused on Afghanistan. Saddam provided us a nic ebalance to Iran's influence. I know the Arabioan peninsula countries are feeling nervous as Iran's influence is growing due to the power vacuum.
Saddam killing at his leisure? Sure, but now, the Shiites can kill Sunnis at their leisure instead of Saddam's Sunnis killing Shiites at their leisure. Could you explain why we decided Saddam's murders are more pressing than the much larger atrocities in Darfur, Rwanda, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Chechnya, and Myanmar?
By the way, I've been there. Have you? Where is your source that they are happy? Maybe in the Green Zone. The only ones who are happy are those who have become rich off of contracts and support from the Americans.
Our first 50 years: 1776-1826. I don't recall us killing each other, sending our women and handicapped as suicide bombers, or being on the brink of civil war. Further, we had the articles of confederation, the constitution, fought off the British, and had a ruling government that wasn't governed by private entities (such as the shiite militias or sunni baathists). The French who assisted us in the revolution did not have to hide in a fortified green zone either. Your comparision does not hold up.
