I don't know this family, but I am sure they are overcome with grief over their son. They have EVERY right to bring forth a lawsuit. They said that had they been warned that a bear was seen in the area, they wouldn't have camped there. I go camping with my family all the time and if I was warned that a bear had been around earlier, I would camp somewhere else. The government has a duty to warn people about dangers - they didn't do that in this case. I know many of you take the hard stance, and say stupid things like, "Warning: Steep cliffs in the area. Gravity is dangerous to your well-being". That is belittling, and cruel to this poor family. Everyone on this board has every right to say what they want, but it seems like most people use it to bash.
As for all the pot shots taken at lawyers - you all are ill-informed idiots who follow the herd and make fun of attorneys. I am married to an attorney, and work with attorneys. My husband is the most compassionate man I know. There are definetely some rotten apples in the bunch, but they are the exception, and not the rule. They are the ones that get all of the attenion, and it sucks for the rest of the hard working ethical attorneys.
I assume most of the posters here are members of the Church of JESUS Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am not a member, but if I was, I would be embarrased to be associated with you all. You are so judgemental and uncompassionate it makes me SICK!!!And, of course, you are not being judgemental at all. All righty, then. I have plenty of compassion for the family in regards to the death of their son (as previously stated), I just don't think that the Wildlife Managers, Forest Service, or whomever, has the responsibility to keep me & my family safe from wild animals. That is my own responsibility, period. My family camped in a campground in the Uintahs one time that had bear-warning signs posted all over the place with statements like "don't leave food out," "place garbage in designated trash receptacles," etc. After having the bear come through our campsite 2 nights in a row to get to the food and garbage the folks next to us had left out, we decided to leave. Having warning signs nailed up made no difference, whatsoever, to these campground neighbors. They were just lucky they only ended up with their jeep scratched to hell, instead of someone in their camp (or the others in the area) getting hurt.

Wow, brighteye! Not a judgmental bone in your body, is there? To call everyone, here, cold-hearted is not judgmental at all, is it?
Here are the non-judgmental facts: 1. All the money in the world will not undo what has been done. 2. The government can not protect us from everything. 3. There are bears in the woods. Everyone knows it. 4. Everyone here has compassion for the fact that they lost their child in such a horrific manner but there is no support for trying to turn this tragedy into a profit. (See items 1, 2, and 3 above.)
By the way, have you walked in the footprints of this family? If not, who then are you to tell everyone to shut their mouths? Oh, and nice to turn this into a Mormon thing...

She 'ASS-umed' that everyone who had made these 'judgmental' remarks were LDS.
And we all know what happens when people 'ASS-ume'.

I have read the boards long enough to know that you douche bags are Mormons (the ones who responded to my last past), and what fine examples you are!
I never said I wasn't judgemental. Everyone is to a certain degree, but most of the people that post here seem to have no life, and post, and post away about how much smarter they are than everyone else. I have a life, and a job, and can't spend all day reading and writing posts.
I don't comment much, but I felt compelled to do so on this particular story. I admit I am judgmental, especially towards asshats like yourself.
