Bail revoked for drunk driver 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 1
This thread discusses the Content article: Bail revoked for drunk driver

His parents are doing him no good by denying that he has a dangerous problem. If you truly love him you would want him to do the time if only with the hope that he will come to his senses.

Don't blame others for calling him what he is - a drunk. Blame him for being such that his poor daughter must deal with the fallout.

I think this decision is appropriate, and I do think it is just too much for all the monitoring for such a short time. I hope that he has some access to AA and NA meetings both in the jail and in prison. I do hope that society is welcoming, and supportive when he is finally released. This will make his road to recovery a little easier. My heart goes out to his parents and his child, they have traveled a very long road. It is sad to say, but if this family lived in almost any other state, I could guarantee that he would have a true support system on the inside and on the out. It seems in Utah, piousness can become a disease and an addiction tooo. Oops! The truth smarts a little doesn't it?

Drinking is an addiction. You can't help someone who doesn't want help. I know. Drinking killed my Uncle. He had all the love and support we could give. But as long as he denied he had a problem and could "quit any time", there was not ONE damn thing we could do. Even when the doctor told him his liver was shot, he continued to drink. I watched this Uncle die piece by piece. This happened in Utah, too.

This Uncle was not active in the Church, but his ward was there for him.

Do you really know what you're talking about?

If this man wanted help, he would have gotten it by now. This isn't his first offense, you know. He has already killed one person. What if his next victim was someone in your family. You'd be singing a different tune then.

Actually yes, I do know what I am talking about. I have been in recovery for over ten years. I was born and raised in Utah, and I do know that no one can do the work for you, not ever, period. I know about the pressure put on children growing up in Utah communities, I now about people playing like it's not happening, and it will go away. My cure actually involved leaving a very beautiful, but extremely judgemental, unhelpful state..I didn't want to go-my parents put me on a plane and made me go. I was 29 years old at the time. I didn't want to recover, and I darn well didn't want to live... but I had other alcoholics and addicts in recovery to pull me up until I wanted it for myself, they made me want to live again. I hope he will be given a support system when he gets out-a halfway house, one that takes you at least a year to graduate from, transitional living, where you have to live there sober for minimum one year, regular meetings, and a society that doesn't turn their back on him-that is what he needs. His parents can't save him, mine couldn't save me, so they literally threw me into the hands of some people that could... all the way across the country, and it broke their hearts. It was tough, and I worked like I have never worked before...ten years later, I still do. I am truly sorry about your Uncle, yes it is absolutely a disease, and there is no cure, but there is an enormous, caring, tougher than you group of people out there that can give support..sometimes whether you want it or not. Again, yes, I know what I am talking about..I lived it..I am still living it. I am very aware that this is not Mr. VanDyke's first offense, I practically grew up with him...and if it happened to one of my loved ones, after what I have put my family through..we would, as a family pray and mourn not only for our loss, but for the family and the person that is addicted.

it's time this guy is locked up for a long time. His actions show that he has no remorse for the lady he killed. I hope the court sees that he's a menace to to anyone on the road. He's had his three strikes, he's out! tell the jury everything that he's done...Shame on his family and Lawyer!!!

I agree. This particular guy has had enough chances. He's already killed one person, and as you say, seems to show no remorse. At some point, you have to say "enough!"
