Unfortunately, nothing changes if nothing changes. He has work to do, and I do hope he is given the resources. My prayers are with him, his family, and the family whose lives he altered permanently. I agree he should be locked up, but I do hope that he is given a chance to better himself and deal with what has become of his life. I cannot behave in an ugly way when it involves someone who is obviously sick and I truly believe he needs help. I have learned in my upbringing to not only pray for the victim, but for the criminal and their families-this is someone's son, father, uncle, brother, friend. I put myself in the place of loosing a loved one to a drunk driver, and also in the place of a loved one being the drunk driver, and I am sorry but I refuse to act hateful. No one wins in this situation, and is up to us as a society to soften our hearts a bit, and help those that need it....otherwise we will release far worse than what we locked up.

If I came across as hateful towards this guy, that wasn't my intent. I just feel like he has had enough chances to get himself into rehab, but he just keeps right on drinking and driving. He does need to be locked up. I see that you agree with that. I also hope he gets help, or, as you say, he will only come out worse off.

I would think that this guy would have "woke up" when he had the fatal accident. That he did not tells me that his addiction really runs deep. I hope he can be helped, but as we both have said, he has to want it first. Does he? I don't know, but I pray he does.

I loved my Uncle to death. I (and the whole family) begged and begged him to get help. He was dragged to more than one AA meeting. But because he didn't want to be there, it didn't help. I'm just thankful he didn't drink and drive and end up killing someone.

Look I don't mean to sound hateful either, but if killing someone doesn't wake you up or get your attention, then its time to do something that will. He's the one making the bad choices and not making any attempt to help himself, so now the choice to help him and protect the innocent has to be made for him...Lets pray that some long hard prison time changes his life for the better.

I don't think you sound hateful, just fed up. And that's ok, I am too. After all, the guy has been arrested all these times. If he hasn't gotten help on his own by now, then yes, he needs to be locked up. Hopefully, he will get help while locked up, or he will just come out ready to go again.
