This thread discusses the Content article: Grand Old Party: Tilton loses House seat at Republican county conventionWhat's not mentioned is that only two made 70% and one of those was because his opponent dropped out. All the rest were very close to going to primaries, mostly likely because of the voucher issue. Yes, even in Utah County! And they most likely would have lost those primary races if their Republican opponents were good Republicans. Most of us DO want Republicans to represent us, but we DON'T want vouchers! DID YOU HEAR THAT? Don't bring it up in the legislature again! Vouchers are contrary to Republican principles. The taxes we pay for education are NOT a subsidy to kids. They pay for A (as in one) education system that all may use. Making more systems is wasteful. Republicans shouldn't be asking for a subsidy to send their own children to private schools. Sending tax money to a private business ALWAYS ends up in government controlling it. Republicans don't socialize private businesses! Real conservatives DON'T support vouchers!

Everyone knows that state legislative leadership, and Utah County party leadership, have serious ethical difficulties. Of course, they deny such difficulties because they say they don't violate ethical rules. Which is true in a sense, because they're careful not to create any substantive ethical rules that they would then violate. They do, however, push the caucus system hard because it's skewed in favor of incumbents, and they don't trust the voters to do the right thing at a primary election. Which makes it very pleasant when an incumbent doesn't win at the party convention.
What's surprising is that Mr. Tilton actually lost completely, instead of just going to a primary election. I think it didn't help him much to keep saying he was being maligned about ethical issues, when the fact is that he himself deceived the press about his financial interest in nuclear power, and only eventually came clean. I have neighbors who are mad at him because he's too ideological to know that public education is a good thing that deserves his support. Personally, I was disgusted that his focus in the legislature was passing laws that limit every governmental entity in the state from making trails, just because he wanted to get at Mapleton because on flake friend of his there didn't like a trail. I like trails. I don't like people who give the shaft to the entire state just to help a friend. What the delegates thought, I don't know, because the convention system isn't at all representative (and the party made sure it's hard to figure out who the delegates are).
A message to the two people who'll be running in November: I'll vote for whoever commits to undo Mr. Tilton's legislation. And I think you'll find a lot of support from cities and counties around the state for cleaning up his mess.

60% of the delegate votes is not enough, in my opinion, to avoid a primary. We need to raise this to 70%, or we will continually be open for special interest groups and extreme candidates to take the GOP nominations.
