This thread discusses the Content article: Ban the phones

My kids better hope they never get caught using a cell phone in class. They'll never get it back! I f I was a teacher i would warn the students the first day not to use phones in my class. If they do then I take them and their parents have to come to the school to get it back! i hear people say " well if I need to get in contact witjh my child and they don't have their phone what do I do?" If the child is in class then you call the school and they can relay a message to the student or if the student leaves the phone in their locker and checks it between classes. Texting has gotten way out of hand. Ya i know I sound like a hardass, but I feel school is a place to learn, not to be texting everyone you know.

Isn't learning supposed to be a voluntary activity? I don't think answering a phone and talking in class is fair because that would distract other kids, but quietly texting should be a students choice. If they do so in a way that unfairly distracts others, then it should be stopped. Whether a student is day dreaming, drawing on their paper, or texting, they aren't paying attention and schools haven't banned paper and pencils. Dislike of cell phones is an unessecary aversion to technology.
