The reason baptisms for the dead are performed are as follows:
1. Baptism is essential to entrance into the Celestial Kingdom. ONLY baptisms performed by a someone having authortiy from Jesus Christ are valid and binding beyond the grave. The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the ONLY church on earth having athority from Jesus Christ.
2. The athority to seal on earth and seal in heaven was restored to the Prophet Joseph Smith by Elijah the prophet.
3. Baptisms for the dead are not new to "true Christianity". The apostle Paul speaks of baptism for the dead in the New Testiment "else what shall they do which are baptised for he dead if the dead rise not at all.....". Paul was teaching about the resurrection and asked the question "why do we baptise for the dead if there is no resurrection"?
4. The Catholics don't understand baptism for the dead simply because the Catholic church is man made and contains only a fraction of the truth along with a whole lot of error. Judisam is the same.
5. Mormons baptise deceased ancestors because they are commanded to do so. Baptising a dead Catholic or Jew doesn't make them a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.
