This thread discusses the Content article: Plum Tree Ream's closesI went there once but Macey's is closer and essentially had the same specials. (both ag stores) It was a pretty store but I loved food 4 less cause the prices were really phenomenal.

I remember many years ago when I was newly married, had a kid and basically struggled to survive, Reams was the food store of choice because it had the best prices around even after they added the 10% which they used to do. Later on, when we were more established and not struggling so much, I'd stop by to grab a reasonably priced hot dog or sandwich for lunch. We eventually moved to a location that was too far from Reams to justify going there to do grocery shopping and my employment took further away so it wasn't practical to stop by for lunch so I hadn't been there for years. Recently, employment brought me back down to the Provo area and I thought I'd stop in at the Plum Tree store to grab a sandwich. Well, I found the prices to be considerably higher for just about everything and the selection wasn't that great. As a matter of fact, the sandwiches that I used to love were gone replaced by the same old things that you find in every other store these days. (IE: dry, very little meat, and overpriced) Simply put, I found no reason to go there. It does not surprise me that the store went under. In my opinion, Reams went from being an original type of store to just another clone of all the rest of the "independent" stores. Sad and too bad...

A couple of things
(1) Even though cig and beer sales accounted for just 1% as the article reported, how much in sales did that 1% do as they purchased other grocery items?
(2) I still love the flagship store at 890 W. Center Street. It is very small, convenient, quaint, low-priced and has everything I need. You don't have to do a 50 mile hike to get what you need there like you do in Wal-Mart, AND when you are done, actual checkers ring you out. Forget the stupid self-check-out kiosks all the bigger stores have switched to.
