If MALDEF thinks that unscrupulous employers are the ones that would benefit, then I don't see why they oppose this effort! After all, MALDEF IS one of the pro-illegal alien groups that support illegal immigration and greedy employers who are willing to treat the illegal alien like a slave.

Side note: E-Verify is easy to use, and does not impose any restrictions on an employer other than checking a database. It's use would verify SSN's and would go a long way to decrease identify theft, and the pain that it causes it's unsuspecting victims.

It also has a fail safe process built in. A no-match ONLY generates a letter, giving the employee 90 days to fix the problem. There are some!

For example, when a woman marries, and forgets to notify Social Security that her name changed, she would have the 90 days to update Social Security - before ANY action would be taken.

It is a good program, and allows, RIGHT NOW, for any employer to voluntarily use it. All should be doing so!

What about all of the visa holders that overstayed their visa?
They were issued Social Security cards with a notation "not valid
for work". I know several people that had counterfeit cards made
to eliminate the "not valid for work" notation. Their name will match
the number, but my understanding is that the "not valid for work"
will not appear when verified.

In addition, what about stolen identities or identities have been
sold where the name and number match. Will verification red flag
a stolen identity or an identity sold by the rightful owner?

I think you are right. It is not a perfect program. BUT, it is better than nothing, isn't it? It WILL catch a good percentage of them, and it should help with the ID theft issues involving SSN's.

Were I so perfect as you wish it were!
