We should want people to be able to share their lives, support each other, and create a safe and loving home for their families.

Assuming that gays were actually interested in giving up the relentlessly hedonistic lives most of them live, why is the intervention of the government necessary for the fairy tale you propose? All those things can be done without government intervention.
