This does not have the appearance of an accident to me. Why is it being reported that way? Have you ever burned toilet paper? I have. It doesn't burn that fast.

Kids will be kids and it is impossible to be with all kids 100% of the time if you have a job, other kids, and a life. This family and especially Tyler are going through some trying times and some pain right now and anyone who could put themselves in this situation in their mind for any or whatever reason, I'm sure any decent person would have a heart and pray for Tyler and his family. It was an unfortunate event and a learning one, none the less it happened and is affecting many in our community who know and care for this boy. Anyone who is willing and caring, donations are being taken at Wells Fargo and also Connvicted Ink Tattoo at 693 N. State St. Orem, Utah 84057.
Hear, Hear. There is very little compassion on this forum.
Kids will find a way. I feel for these parents.

I hope your post is an attempt at sarcasm. If not, then my response is: my children have always had access to lighters and/or matches and not once have started a fire. One the other side of that coin, my nieghbors have always had to hide their matches and/or lighters yet that didn't stop their son from destroying most of their house by lighting a silk ficus on fire. It's not about making new laws - aren't there enough of those?

Proud to be a wicked witch and uppity wench.
Words for Dubbs from an apostle: "More regrettable than the [LDS] Church being accused of not being Christian is when church members react to such accusations in an un-Christlike way," Apostle Robert D. Hales said on the second day of the two-day conference. "Surely our Heavenly Father is saddened - and the devil laughs - when we contentiously debate doctrinal differences with our Christian neighbors."

I agree with leftintheuc, Momberg, doug_wallace and Stringbean. This story is more than heart breaking, it is outrageous and suspicious.
ndinehart, you need to rethink your position, and perhaps much more.
"Kids will be kids" is what you say when a child has messed up the house, said something embarrassing, or thrown up on your favorite necktie ... not when they have severely burned a another child and irreversibly altered his life! Holy cow!
And while I'm sure any "decent person" would pray for Tyler and his family, at the same time those same decent people are wondering how is it children have lighters, and how is it these children reached the age of 11 without being taught that playing with fire is wrong. Even if their parents aren't telling them, at that age, common sense should have, don't you think?
It is important to "have a heart," but it is also important to have a brain!
What reason could there possibly be for 11 year old children to be out and about with a lighter? It's not like they can legally smoke, or legally set fires where they were. So why?
Pretty much the only thing 11 year olds could do with a lighter is pretty much what they did: use it irresponsibly.
I feel so badly for Tyler.
When I was a little older than him, a gas oven blew up in my face. I still have some scars, but for the most part I don't think people can tell. But they could for awhile, and I'm just sick about this. Tyler has no idea yet how much this will affect his life.
I'm a father of 7 kids, our youngest is 11 years old, and although we cannot be with our children 100% of the time, our teachings can be.
Hopefully we parents are taking our responsibilities for our children seriously and not shirking them or making excuses.
I was raised by a working single mom who certainly found the time to teach us 8 kids not to play with fire.
Please don't take what I or others are saying wrong. From what I've read, no one wants to add to the grief of this horrible situation.
Concern for the for the welfare of the innocent is not a "lack of compasion." We are hoping that those responsible are acting like it, so we won't have to read any more heart breaking stories like this.

Kids - Fire, hello. There is a natural fascination for humans and fire. Kids are going to press the boundaries. They are going to test the rules no matter if it is thier parents rule or law.
What would you do. Wrap them in bubble wrap and confine them to thier rooms and hope the house doesn't get hit my a meteorite?
It is sad and tragic but it is going to happen. Utah doesn't have a monopoly on this type of thing.
We can feel for the parents and family of all. Hopefully this experinence will be an example to others.
