It's a hold out from when there were lots of sick people and they didn't want them spreading illnesses. I've got a book that mentions a bunch of stupid laws that are still on the books that never got removed. Some are really funny.
Then there's others that should always be on the books to protect people (e.g., polygamy). Trying to sort of be on topic.

I'll admit that I am very, very ignorant when it comes to polygamy. Easily swayed by the arguments of others. I find myself agreeing with (most) of the posters, whatever side of the issue they're on.
From what I understand, polygamy itself is not harmful, but rather the practices that usually accompany it. Yet aren't these abusive practices also found in monogamous unions, too?
Anyway, like I said, I'm pretty ignorant about the whole deal.
