Or where Wall Street is allowed to use the government as a private safety net. I was reading that most local and regional banks are just fine with plenty of cash to loan. We would only be bailing out the large institutions.

I'm glad to see Matheson opposing this bailout, though probably not for the same reasons as most commenters on this board.

My position coincides fairly well with statements from Dennis Kucinich and Russ Feingold. In a nutshell: this bailout addresses only one symptom of the problem, and does so in the wrong way. The root of the problem would be better addressed by (1) providing significant help to distressed homeowners, fixing the problem from the bottom up, and (2) instating stronger regulations on the financial market to keep the same mess from happening again.
