This thread discusses the Content article: Longtime Republican leaves partyDean Hawker has my admiration. I have seen the same trends that he sees in the Utah Republican party, and have come to the same conclusion -- opt out. Chaffetz's nomination at the convention only reinforced my determination to support the Democratic candidate for Congress. Chaffetz is the poster boy for the rabid right. Until the Republican hierarchy gets a little shaking up, 40 % of the voters in Utah (Us UNA's) will remain unrepresented.

Jason Chaffetz announced Tuesday the he has received the endorsement of the National Rifle Association.
"I believe in the Second Amendment unequivocally, and I intend to fight aggressively to maintain the right to bear arms," said Chaffetz, who is a gun owner and concealed-carry permit holder. He received an A-grade from the NRA while opponent Bennion Spencer received a C.
Just what we need, another gun grabbing Democrat as the country edges towards another Great Depression.
On the other hand, a black president ordering the army to shoot black and hispanic rioters to maintain order when the states go bankrupt and the welfare is shut off probably appeals to the globalists running things.

Chaffetz has said he was only talking about those who have committed crimes while in the United States.
That should have been obvious.
I don't have a problem with somone switching parties. The democrats can use good people. I was initially impressed with the democrat running for 3rd district US rep - until I read his website, and listened to him.
I don't want someone in DC that feels that federal tax cuts hurt families. I don't want sociallized medicine. We have a democrat that isn't super liberal, but he still is more than most people in Utah.
I don't want someone that is going to encourage more illigal immigration. Providing a pathway to citizenship does exactly that. Initially, we had a democrat that was going to require English, a Fine, and requiring someone to get to the back of the line. If Bennion still believes that, he isn't saying it anymore, and he changed his website to delete those requirements.
I like John McCain fixing it so medical insurance is affordable to individuals and families - without requiring insurance to go through an employer. When I had a job working for someone else, I didn't expect my employer to pay for my car insurance. I agree that medical insurance is a responsibity - not a right.
That is not where the democrat candidate is on health care.
Jason was the best of the 3 republicans running for 3rd district, and is the best of the 3 left running now. If Dean had thought he would be better, he should have run.

His former party, he said, has gone from the "Big Tent" to a combination of the "good ol' boys" and far-right radicals.
Jason isn't a far- right radical. He certainly isn't a "good ol' boy". He is a bit of a maverick, and we need someone to represent Utah, and not represent DC.

Have you seen how much insurance costs without the risk being spread amongst the employees? How do you propose people pay for the full premiums without employer-subsidization?
