Payson

There are full-grown men, rosining up their bull ropes who started out in Mutton Bustin' at the home town rodeo. Mutton Bustin' is a rodeo sheep riding event for five to seven-year-olds. Kids are given a full grown sheep to ride from the chute into the arena for a short time. In roping parlance, it's catch-as-catch-can; kids are allowed to hold on to the wool, the sheep's neck -- hook their legs around the belly. All they have to do is make a short, good ride. The Fiesta Days Rodeo Queens and the Diamond Fork Riding Club members surround the kids and help them in their ride.

A Payson city councilman says he confronted two teens who were tagging his truck, but Ali Ludlow and Cody Baumann say there were standing in the shade on the side of a building in Payson last month when someone grabbed their necks from behind and attacked them.

Payson's first schools were not the largest or the most famous in Utah. But no city was more typical of pioneer enterprise than Payson. The first school was not free to the public. The training of each student was paid for by the parents who had foodstuffs, or labor, or perhaps a bit of each with which they could barter with the teacher.

The year was 1968. The new Payson High school had just finished construction and the school year had just wrapped up. Four Payson High School students, Jay Jolley, Jamie Marvin, Lemuel Harsh, and Robin Anderson were pondering the long, hot summer ahead.

The 111th annual Iceland Days -- Iceland Days 2008 -- will be held in Spanish Fork on June 20-22. Spanish Fork is the oldest continuous Icelandic settlement in North America. Families and friends are invited to attend free workshops on Friday night (June 20, the Family and Friends Fair on Saturday, June 21, and the Icelandic Heritage Fireside on Sunday, June 22.

The South Utah County Relay for Life will take place June 20 at Payson Memorial Park. Activities begin at 5:30 on Friday, June 20. The Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fund raising event. In 2007, the relay raised more than $1.6 million to fund research. The goal for 2008 is $1.84 million.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Troy C. Jones has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
