Jose Meijia's hands are stained a shiny, smooth black from the tiny shavings of gold, like the stains on the hand of a left-handed school boy with a No. 2 pencil. His hands are callused and word from decades of work, yet they are still delicate despite their large size and obvious strength. The tough calluses are useful as, with bare fingers, he works a tiny gold and diamond ring across a polishing machine that is spinning at high speeds. With each pass across the machine, friction brings the precious metal closer to scalding temperatures.
