LOCAL OPINION: iProvo might save city and residents millions

Jesse Harris

I had the opportunity to attend the inaugural meeting of the iProvo Review Committee and walked away with a significant amount of new data including copies of the reports from CCG Consulting and Franklin Court Partners. After digesting where the network is and where it is going, I can come to only one conclusion: iProvo is a valuable city asset with the potential to save city departments and residents millions of dollars every year.

UTOPIA, iProvo need to hit 'off' button

M. Royce Van Tassell

Utah's municipal telecom systems, iProvo and UTOPIA, are failing. Having spent a collective $190 million, they have yet to meet a single financial or subscriber goal. Provo Mayor Lewis Billings is contemplating a variety of options, including selling iProvo to the private sector, but UTOPIA wants its members to prop up the failure with $504 million in sales tax dollars. There is only one solution to these failures: UTOPIA and iProvo need to cut their losses, and sell their systems to the private sector.

Pit bull -- Ticking time bomb or trusted friend?

Tug Gettling

DIRECTOR, NORTH UTAH VALLEY  ANIMAL SERVICES

The American Pit bull Terrier is a breed of dog that was traditionally bred to fight. For years and years all of the attributes that make a dog good at fighting were selected for and bred into the pit bull. All of this selective breeding produced a dog that has become such a dominant dog-fighting breed that other breeds are not even considered competition for the pit bull. This also produced a dog with undying loyalty, unmatched tenacity, incredible strength, an extremely high pain threshold and unreal biting power. Pit bulls have a high potential for harming humans and before I discuss this potential and the possible repercussions on society, let me present some accurate information regarding this highly misunderstood breed.

Utahns must have say in use of Utah lands

On Jan. 24, I wrote a letter to the editor criticizing Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-New York, for working in Congress to lock up more than 9.5 million acres of Utah's public lands as federal wilderness. I suggested that the congressman should look to his own state and leave Utah to Utahns.

Government goes overboard in plane safety flap

James C. Green

It's outrageous the airlines are having to put up the pure harassment that the government has foisted upon them in the last weeks! Their airplanes are perfectly safe; there has never ever been a problem caused by the MD-80 wiring bundles the FAA is claiming are questionably unsafe. And for the FAA to impose totally unrealistic expectations for compliance with inspection edicts is completely irresponsible.

GOP elections shouldn't be 'automatic'

Peggy Burdett

What is an automatic GOP delegate and why isn't the definition the same in all the counties in the state? Why is the county automatic delegate total in Senator Curtis Bramble's senate seat about 16 percent, while the total number of automatic delegates in Utah County is only 10 percent of the delegate total? Why do Juab, Box Elder, Millard, and Wasatch counties have only automatic state delegates, with no automatic county delegates?
