WASHINGTON -- U.S. steel pipe manufacturers, who have been battling a surge in imports from China, won a major victory Friday when the International Trade Commission cleared the way for the imposition of stiff penalty tariffs for the next five years.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- With the backdrop of a nation caught in the grip of skyrocketing fuel prices, a San Carlos, Calif., auto repair shop is trying to convert Toyota Priuses and possibly other hybrids to plug-ins that could be charged overnight through a standard outlet and get even better gas mileage.

As many as 200 Mstar Metro customers on iProvo may be left out of an emergency transition to Broadweave Networks after a third-party provider to Mstar threatened to cut off phone services on the fiber-optic network on Friday, forcing Broadweave to scramble to take over those customers.

All 1,200 to 1,300 Mstar Metro phone customers on iProvo became customers of Broadweave Networks as of today -- an unexpected transition that happened before the sale of the fiber-optic network to the West Jordan company is completed. The sale is scheduled to be done by June 30.

Bluffdale contractor fined for violating federal labor laws--AKI Industries Inc., a Bluffdale-based contractor, was fined $58,905 in civil penalties for repeatedly failing to pay overtime to its employees. The company is now challenging the civil penalty, and the case is being referred to the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Administrative Law Judges.
