VALLEY CENTER PLAYHOUSE

'In-Laws or Out-Laws'

"In-Laws or Out-Laws" opens this week at Valley Center Playhouse, 780 N 200 East, Lindon. Performances are Friday, Saturday and Monday, 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 8.

The play is written by Kurt Arnold and directed by Jody Renstrom.

Ticket prices are $6 regular admission, $5 student, children and seniors and $25 per family. Tickets are available at the door from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on performance nights. Please do not bring children under 4 or babes in arms. For directions and reservations call 785-1186.

SCERA

AIDA auditions

SCERA will hold auditions for its Utah premiere production of the Tim Rice/Elton John musical "AIDA," directed by Chad Taylor with choreography by Rick Robison, playing in SCERA Showhouse II Sept. 9 -Oct. 3 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays at 7:30 p.m.

All roles are available. Auditions will be held in Room B1 of the SCERA Center, 745 S. State, Orem on Tuesday from 7-9:30 and Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m. Auditioners age 16 and older should prepare to sing 32 measures of an upbeat Broadway-style song. An accompanist or CD player will be provided. Those who audition should bring a headshot and résumé, if possible. Black singers/actors and strong male dancers are especially needed.

Callbacks will be posted every hour during auditions. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday from 8-10 p.m. A dance audition will take place at callbacks.

PLEASANT GROVE ARTS COMMISSION

Bluegrass Thunder to perform

Bluegrass Thunder will perform this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert in the Park on the east lawn of the Pleasant Grove Recreation Center.

Organized in 1998, Bluegrass Thunder accompanied Cloggers West, of Pleasant Grove, to various folk festivals in Europe.

Since that time, the band has performed in concert at various places, including Sundance, the Springville Folk Fest, and was featured in five performances for the 2002 Olympic Games at Soldier Hollow and the Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City.

Featuring fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, string bass, accordion and keyboard, the group performs bluegrass tunes as well as modern country and Old Western songs. The group is directed by Terry Tucker, former choral music teacher at Pleasant Grove High School.

ALPINE COMMUNITY THEATER

Ice cream social

The Alpine Community Theater is inviting everyone to the Annie Warbucks Ice Cream Social Saturday at Legacy Park in downtown Alpine at 6 p.m. The social is sponsored by the Alpine Community Arts Council and will feature music, entertainment from the stars of the upcoming musical production of "Annie Warbucks," activities for the kids, prizes and all-you-can-eat ice cream sundaes for $1. Three items will be auctioned that night including a 7-day fishing float trip in Alaska valued at $2,000, $1000 towards rock landscaping and a Wedding Day Basket valued at $800. Pioneer Legacy

Experience the hardship and the joy of the pioneers at the free performance of "Pioneer Legacy" July 22 and 23 at 9 p.m. at the Springville Arts Park, 620 S 1350 East, Springville.

Told through music, song, and dance, "Pioneer Legacy" is the story of pioneer Elizabeth Fox, convert to the LDS Church in England.

Pageant creator and director Lynne Thompson says that Fox's story is representative of many pioneers and of us all.

"Elizabeth was alone on the plains," said Lynne. "We all have times when we are alone and we need to be healed -- emotionally, physically, and spiritually."

The pageant is choreographed by Thompson of Orem, with music by husband David Thompson, and a cast of more than 200, including dancers from Pleasant Grove, Lindon, and American Fork. The hour-long performances are free to the public.

JOHN HUTCHINGS MUSEUM

Programs offered

This month's guest speaker will be Dave Jabusch. He will speak on the Pony Express on Monday at 7 p.m. in the John Hutchings Museum of Natural History, 55 N. Center St., Lehi.

Jabusch's presentation will focus on the Pony Express stations in Utah.

The museum will also be open that evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with free admission.

The following program are being offered at the museum over the next few weeks.

July 21: Secret Codes -- The class will teach students how to write and solve secret codes. Mysteries will then be providing for fun and games. Cost: $2. Time: 10 a.m.

July 26: Pressing Flowers -- The class will learn to make a press and how to preserve flowers and plants to study or to make pictures. Cost $3. Time: 10 a.m.

July 27: Pioneer skills and stories. Class will learn how to make hand-dipped candles and also homemade ice cream using several fun techniques. Cost $3. Time: 10 a.m.

AMERICAN FORK ARTS COUNCIL

Timpanogos Chorale auditions

Auditions for the Timpanogos Chorale will be held Aug. 9 and 10 at 7 p.m. in the Alpine Tabernacle in American Fork. Auditions are open to anyone age 14 and older.
