Young soloists auditions --

Auditions for young soloists for the April 24 concert with the American Fork Symphony will be held Jan. 21. These auditions will be held in the music department of American Fork Junior High School, 1120 N. 20 West.

Categories are: elementary -- ages 12 and under; junior -- ages 13 through 15; and senior -- ages 16 through 18. All instrumental players and vocalists may audition, but former winners must wait until they are in the next age level to audition again. Contestants will perform in their appropriate age level only.

Instrumentalists should prepare a movement from a standard concerto or solo with orchestral accompaniment. Vocalists should prepare a standard aria or solo with orchestra (no "pop" songs, however).

Two pianos will be available and contestants must bring their own accompanist. Pianists may perform unaccompanied, but all other contestants should perform with an accompanist. Each contestant will be allowed eight minutes and should make necessary cuts to fit this time.

Orchestral scores and parts must be readily available through standard sources. Winners will be selected according to performance standards.

The judges' decision will be final.

An audition fee of $15 will be charged for each applicant. An application form must be filled out and returned with a picture and the fee by Jan. 6. Application forms may be obtained from teachers, music stores, Web site www.americanforksymphony.org, or from the orchestra president, Maxine Steele. Teachers may duplicate this form as needed.

Each contestant will receive an audition time by mail or phone by Jan. 10. Audition schedules will be available to teachers at that time also.

Those who wish additional information may contact Maxine Steele at 756-2330 or 48 W. 600 North, American Fork, Utah 84003.

Inti-Illimani to perform -- The Amnesty International Chapter of Provo has organized the Let Haiti Live Benefit Concert that will be held Friday in the UVSC Grande Ballroom at 8 p.m.

The concert will feature a live performance by the Chilean folk group Inti-Illimani.

Amnesty International has organized the event to make others aware of the poverty and sickness in Haiti and to raise funds to help alleviate those problems.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the Haitian people since the proceeds of the concert will be going to charities in Haiti," said Jessy Gonzalez, one of the concert organizers and a member of Amnesty International.

Inti-Illimani originated nearly 40 years ago by a group of Chilean engineering students.

Their folk sound is a blend of passion and poetry.

The group has played in several other Amnesty International concerts with Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Mercedes Sosa, Sting and Wynton Marsalis.

There is a $20 admission fee and all proceeds will go to Amnesty International.

Amnesty International will then distribute the funds to several non-profit organizations to provide aid for the people of Haiti.

Tickets can be purchased at Campus Connection, (801) 863-8797, or at Los Andes Chilean Restaurant in Orem.
