COUNTY WIDE The Utah State Historical Society is calling for nominations of individuals or groups who have contributed to history, historic preservation, and archaeology in Utah and who deserve recognition for their efforts. The organization will give awards for outstanding achievement and service at its annual meeting in September.
Nomination forms are available at history.utah.gov or by calling 801-533-3500. The deadline for submissions is April 30. ALPINE Police chief Kip Botkin of the Alpine/Highland Police department is asking residents to work to prevent burglary. He is urging residents to lock the cars and homes and to be aware of what is going on around them. AMERICAN FORK The Planning and Zoning Commission has decided to continue to seek improvements to 50 South St., although not at the guidelines specified in the city's general plan. Commissioners decided to allow a 72-foot cross section, although they will keep an 82-foot standard in the general plan for the future. CEDAR FORT At their Town Council meeting on Feb. 14, council members will consider nominees to fill the vacancy on the Board of Adjustments created when Howard Anderson became mayor of Cedar Fort. Anderson had been re-appointed to the Board of Adjustments in June. Cedar Fort residents who are interested in applying for the seat may contact any member of the town council or town recorder Virginia Cook at 768-3608. EAGLE MOUNTAIN At recent City Council meeting, Councilwoman Heather Jackson suggested that the city open its doors to the public on Fridays. City employees currently work a four-day work week, Monday through Thursday, with all city offices closed on Fridays. Jackson, who ran her campaign on the promise of improved customer service, suggests that city employees work a staggered schedule instead, so that everyone could still enjoy three-day weekends while providing citizens with services on Fridays. Mayor Olsen said that he will discuss the ideas with his staff and report back to the council. FAIRFIELD The Town Council will review a contract between the town and the Utah State Park Service at its meeting on Thursday. Town leaders and park officials are hoping to formalize the arrangement allowing the council to use the remodeled Historic Fairfield Schoolhouse for town meetings. LEHI The Lehi Legacy Center sold $40,000 worth of annual memberships -- 103 family passes, four senior individual, 20 individual and 14 couple passes -- during its annual health fair. More than 20 blood donors gave at the fair. A video otoscope supplied and operated by audiologist Brent Fox showed the inside of participants' ears along with their ear hair and wax. His was one of several free clinics and demonstrations at the event. There were biophotonic scannings, massages, face painting, eye checks, blood nutritional analysis and crowds of people at the extravaganza. MAPLETON Pat and Albert Harmer met with the City Council Feb. 1 to encourage council members to finish the Clyde Park on the north side of the city adjacent to Springville. Harmer also handed the city a petition signed by about 70 of the neighbors to the park, all who would like to see the park completed. The council indicated that while the park will not be used for youth programs, the neighborhood park can by used by citizens for picnics, reflection and green space. The park has been in the planning stage for several years, and some basic site work has been accomplished by the Clyde family. PAYSON The Payson Civic Chorale, under the direction of David Dahlquist, will hold a benefit concert featuring Cherie Call, Lincoln Highway, and the BYU Folk Music Ensemble on March 4 at 7 p.m. at the Payson High School auditorium, 1050 S. Main. Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased from any chorale member or by phone at 465-1600 or 318-0284. The chorale is raising funds for a trip to New York where they will appear at Carnegie Hall in June. Donations to group are accepted at any Zion's bank. PLEASANT GROVE The city is looking for volunteers to serve on the Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment. Those individuals interested in serving must submit a written letter of application with name, address, telephone number and qualifications to Kathy Kresser, Community Development Dept., 86 E. 100 S., Pleasant Grove, 84062. SARATOGA SPRINGS Students and their families gathered with Alpine School Board members and school officials to dedicate the Saratoga Shores Elementary School building on Jan. 31. An 85-voice student choir sang "A World of Difference" and "We Can be the Ones" as well as a selection of patriotic songs. Principal Glenn Martin introduced a slide show documenting the construction of the school. Visitors had the chance to tour the school during an open house following the dedication. SPANISH FORK City Planning Director Emil Pierson has given his notice. According to the city Web site, applications are being taken to fill his job. The application date closes on Feb. 21. Pierson's last day will be Feb. 23. The position, which pays between $53,000 and $68,000, is responsible for doing feasibility studies, keeping on top of ordinances affecting planning, zoning, signage, land use, development, and business licenses. Pierson recently finalized the city master plan.
