UTAH VALLEY STATE COLLEGE

'Flight From Death' screening at UVSC

Utah Valley State College will host a screening of the film, "Flight From Death: The Quest for Immortality," today at 6 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, room 101.

The film is a documentary about the psychological effects of death anxiety and how that anxiety arouses violent behavior. Greg Bennick, co-producer and co-writer, will host a prescreening introduction to the film as well as an open discussion after the screening.

"Our versions of truth, our beliefs and our culture help soothe our anxieties by surrounding us with familiarity," Bennick said. "And 'Flight from Death' looks at what happens when different versions of truth collide."

The film is based on Pulitzer Prize winner Ernest Becker's 1974 theories of death anxiety in addition to 30 years of research in social psychology. The four-year creation of "Flight from Death" took Bennick, his partner Patrick Shen and their team, across the globe to film in Egypt, Israel, Guyana, Greece, China, Afghanistan, Thailand, Canada and the United States.

Bennick is a friend of the late Blake Donner, a UVSC student who died in a cave accident in Provo last summer with three others including Jennifer Galbraith, also a UVSC student. The UVSC Donner-Galbraith Scholarship Fund was initiated as a memorial to the students and Bennick will honor the students by donating his $1,000 screening and appearance fee to the fund.
