In overwhelmingly Republican Utah County, winning the primary makes the general election in November a done deal. This year's vote has national, state, county and city impact and multimillion-dollar bonds are in the balance.

Congress District 3

Rep. Chris Cannon (incumbent) vs. John D. Jacob

A national bellwether, Cannon and Jacob have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a race that has focused almost solely on illegal immigration. Jacob has garnered much support with his tough stance. Cannon pays some lip service to enforcement, but adds that it's a complicated issue that includes huge economic benefits.

While polls show Jacob running a tough race, something Cannon hasn't faced for a while, he's had his share of problems. Questions remain about his employing a couple from Chile who didn't have the proper visas to work full-time in the United States. He also created a bit of flap after saying that Satan is working against him by ruining business deals that would have freed up more money to add to the campaign.

State House - District 58

James A. Ferrin (incumbent) vs. Stephen Eric Sandstrom

Education funding is high on both candidates' list. Ferrin has faced accusations that his business benefits from charter schools that sprout up because of laws he supports. Sandstrom had his own explaining to do when it was discovered he owed $128,997 in federal taxes. Sandstrom said that was the result of bad bookkeeping by an employee who has been fired. Immigration is also hot, with Ferrin saying the driver privilege card immigrants must get is a step forward while Sandstrom says state lawmakers have been too soft on the issue.

State House - District 61

Garr P. Judd vs. Keith Grover

Judd wants to see the state get tougher with illegal immigrants, opposing the driver privilege card and in-state tuition. While Grover hears the complaints about immigration, he says the biggest issues are "location specific." For example, for people close to Geneva Road, that road and the work it needs are the focus. Judd would also like to see lower taxes and explore toll road options to fund transportation projects. Grover said his focus in the campaign is personal property rights and local control in government, especially schools.

County Commissioner - Seat A

Gary J. Anderson vs. Jerry D. Grover (incumbent)

Law enforcement is a major issue. Anderson would like to fund more deputies, saying not enough enforcement is happening in the canyons. Grover wants to see the jail expansion through and increase the capacity of the drug court. They disagree on participation in the Mountainland Association of Governments. Grover helped the county back out of MAG in a play for control of senior services. Anderson says the county should rejoin.

County Clerk/Auditor

Cary McConnell vs. Bryan E. Thompson

McConnell has six years of experience in the office as a deputy clerk/auditor. He wants to see through continued use of the new electronic voting machines.

Thompson, a quality assurance/product manager, wants to see the leadership in the clerk/auditor's office improved.

Pleasant Grove recreation bond

The city is proposing construction of a new recreation facility planned to be built in the city's Gateway area near the Interstate 15 interchange. The bond would be for $5 million. The new community center would be approximately 50,000 square feet, three times the size of the current community center that was built in 1908.

Provo school bond and leeway tax

The Provo City School District would sell $35 million in bonds to rebuild Timpanogos Elementary and build an elementary school on the city's west side. The district also is seeking an annual $1.5 million leeway, a permanent voter-approved tax increase, to operate and maintain schools.
