FALSE BOMB ALARM -- Springville police found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the back seat of a car Friday morning, but rather than being filled with explosives, it was filled with pennies and paste. A piece of galvanized pipe with plastic end caps was found in the back seat of a Springville woman's vehicle shortly after 6 a.m.
The Utah County Bomb Squad was called in and removed the device, Springville police Lt. Dave Caron said. After x-raying the pipe, the squad dismantled it and found it was filled with pennies and a white paste-like substance. "We don't know if someone put it in there trying to be funny," Caron said. Police are continuing to investigate whether the concoction would actually have been explosive or not, Caron said. It is unknown whether criminal charges will be filed once police identify who created the item. FORMER CHOIR MEMBER CHARGED -- A former Mormon Tabernacle Choir member was formally charged with several counts of lewdness involving a child and sexual exploitation of a minor. Robert B. Matthews, 51, appeared in 4th District Court Friday. Police say Matthews allegedly took four children to the Diamond Fork hot pots in Spanish Fork Canyon in July and photographed the children nude. Matthews also allegedly went swimming nude with the boys in the springs. Matthews is charged with three counts of lewdness involving a child, class A misdemeanors, and four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, second-degree felonies.
