SALT LAKE CITY -- Three outdoor products companies on Monday announced plans to relocate to Utah or expand existing operations here -- news state officials say solidifies the state as a premiere location for outdoor-related businesses. Development Corporation of Utah President and CEO Jeff Edwards said in a statement. Representatives from Backcountry.com, Peregrine Outfitters and Smith Sport Optics made their announcements on the third day of the annual Outdoor Retailers Winter Market Expo, a trade show that annually brings more than 14,000 outdoor industry manufacturers, retailers, distributors and wholesalers. Online retailer Backcountry.com already has a work force of 430 in Park City and West Valley City. The company, which sells more than 250 brands of outdoor gear, plans a $4.8 million expansion that would increase its work force by 1,250, an EDC Utah news release states. Vermont-based wholesale distributor Peregrine Outfitters plans to open a warehouse in Ogden for product distribution. The operation will employ 25 workers. Also expanding in Utah is well-known ski goggle and helmet manufacturer Smith Sport Optics. The company has acquired a 120,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Clearfield. The company initially considered relocating, but has decided to stay retaining 201 Utah jobs, EDC Utah spokeswoman Tauni Everett said. Smith also plans to expand its Utah work force by about 60 over the next few years, she said.
