It won't take a lot of money to go aboard Valley Center Playhouse's "Cruise of Love" starting this week.

Unique to Valley Center Playhouse, "Cruise of Love" is a romantic comedy about three couples who were all assigned to the same room aboard a cruise line ship.

The three couples include newlyweds, a pair of hillbillies and a millionaire couple -- who all must come to a conclusion about who will take the room.

The comedy aspect is also heightened with other cruise passengers, including models and a nervous detective sent to spy on the millionaire and his wife.

"It's a high-energy play with a lot of fun and a lot of great actors," said Joseph Smith, who will be playing the head purser.

Although the play is not a musical, it includes a fashion show by the on-board models and a singing production typical to a cruise line show.

"There is a lot of experience in this play because it requires a large cast of adults, so she had to draw on some people who have done plays before," Smith said.

The script is unique to Valley Center Playhouse as owner and director Jody Renstrom wrote the play 17 years ago.

"My family said that I ought to take a year and do my plays, so this is my year," Renstrom said. "I'm doing all my plays but two."

Renstrom said she enjoys writing comedic plays that are appropriate for a family theater.

"This play is an audience favorite," she said. "One lady told me, 'I'm so glad I came tonight -- this has just lifted me.' You need a lift every once in a while."

Smith said most of the actors come out to perform just because they enjoy theater.

"It's a community theater, so we're not getting paid," he said. "It's all volunteer, so you may get a variety of talent and experience."
