I was shocked to hear that Cheney is going to speak at BYU's commencement at the invitation of the First Presidency. How is it possible that the leadership of a school with "the world as its campus" is so clueless about what its "campus" thinks? Out in the world, Cheney is regarded as a heinous criminal with arrogant disdain for human life.
Does the First Presidency not realize that they're putting overseas missionaries, worldwide membership, international church facilities and the ability to spread Christ's gospel at risk by associating the church with a liar. If the church is perceived as associating with geo-political U.S. policies (or the policies of any country), then the church will then legitimize itself as a target for terrorism. I plead with the First Presidency (affirmed prophets, seers and revelators for all the people of the earth) to think about the worldwide implications of this decision. I implore the church to not be so foolish as to "render unto Caesar that which only belongs to God." The church and its members must remain as "harmless as doves" if the message is to be heard with open hearts and minds. Timmy Chou, Midvale
