Woodworth views not shared at Marriott School Print E-mail
Daily Herald

In opinion pieces and in comments made on various television and radio programs, Professor Warner P. Woodworth has made strong statements concerning Vice President Cheney's visit to Brigham Young University. Dr. Woodworth's continuing editorials and media appearances have prompted us to respond.

Dr. Woodworth's writings and interviews do not represent the views of the Marriott School. Following Dr. Woodworth's statements, numerous faculty members expressed disappointment that a colleague would make such comments regarding the vice president and the invitation extended by the board of trustees.

Although faculty includes Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, we believe there are few, if any, who support Dr. Woodworth's messages. BYU champions balanced and respectful political discourse among faculty and students. Various political views are welcomed and encouraged. For example, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Chief Justice John Roberts have accepted invitations to speak on campus in the coming months. Past visitors have included national and international political leaders as well as ambassadors and authors of many political persuasions. We look forward to having key world leaders visit in an atmosphere of respect and civility.
