An undiscovered Christmas Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Today, Thursday, Dec. 13, The Museum of Peoples and Cultures at BYU will be exploring Christmas traditions from around the world through nativities, songs and stories.

During the Undiscovered Christmas event, children, students, families and community members can come to the MPC and view a collection of Nativities from the American Southwest.

"They are really good representatives because they integrate things from native American Cultures into Christianity," said Glenna Nielson, curator of collections at the MPC. "Most of the people from that area don't come from a Christian background so you get elements like coyotes instead of cow, kachinas for Wiseman, and pueblos instead of stables. It's a really interesting world view."

During the event, a live storyteller will read Christmas tales from cultures that dot the globe while sounds of the season get visitors in the holiday mood.

Visitors can color paper ornaments or make a glass bulb nativity ornaments for $1, or complete a word search to win a certificate to make one of these stunning ornaments. "This is really a fun event where people of all ages can participate, learn about Christmas in other places, and see some really unique nativities." said Katie Criddle, promotions manager at the museum.

This event will go from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Museum of Peoples and Cultures, 700 N. 100 East in Provo. It is open to all audiences.
