Cougar women to host UNLV

Daily Herald

Following a victory at Colorado State last weekend to open conference play, the BYU women's basketball will try to win its first MWC home game of the season today when the Cougars host UNLV at 7 p.m.

The game will be televised live on BYUTV and can be heard on 96.7 FM.

The Rebels (6-9, 2-0 MWC) come to Provo after beating Colorado State and Air Force to begin league play. UNLV is led by senior forward Sequoia Holmes, who is averaging 19.3 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds. Shamela Hampton, a junior center, is averaging 11.9 points and 7.1 boards a game.

The Cougars (7-6, 1-0), meanwhile, are coming into the contest on a three-game winning streak, with victories over the Rams, Utah State and UCLA. BYU is 4-2 in games played at the Marriott Center this season.

Leading the way for the Cougars is senior guard Mallary Carling, who is averaging 13.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Fellow senior Laurn Varley, the team's starting center, is averaging 8.5 points and 8.7 rebounds a game.

In the two teams' meetings last season, both squads won on their home court. The Cougars beat UNLV 64-59 in the Marriott Center, while the Rebels picked up a 76-71 overtime win in Las Vegas.
