Zuke knows who will win the big games Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Sometimes it sucks to be me.

Do you know what it's like to be the bearer of bad news every week?

Wednesday night, I saw Timpanogos' Gentry Croft and had to break the news to him that Timpanogos was not going to beat Pleasant Grove.

"But we always play Pleasant Grove tough. We ...," Croft said.

Zip.

It's not going to happen, and of course it didn't.

Croft had to go to the game knowing the outcome.

The same thing happened to Tyler Hanks, who asked me if I thought Spanish Fork could beat Lone Peak.

"They beat them last year and I think ...," Hanks said.

Zip.

I told him Lone Peak by 15, but I was wrong. It was Lone Peak by 20.

Hopefully Hanks kept that little secret to himself. No sense in canceling the games.

With that in mind, I'm ready to deliver the bad news to several teams tonight as I prepare to tip-off Week 1 of the Beat the Zuke contest.

If you haven't entered the contest this week, do it now. Go to heraldextra.com and click on sports. Go to preps and look for the Beat the Zuke contest.

Now let's get to this week's winners.

Tooele at Springville

Since there are some monster games this week, I thought we should start with a warm-up. You know, kind of like layup drills.

Springville's Michael Salazar could take the second half off and the Red Devils will still win by double digits. Trading Lehi for Tooele turned out to be a great move for the rest of Region 7 teams.

Spanish Fork at Lehi

Word is that Dallin Naulu, Matt Gardner and Zach Clayton are using this game to see who will represent the Dons in the Beat the Zuke 3-point shootout. Whoever has the most 3s in this game is the rep.

Bombs away.

• Spanish Fork 60, Lehi 57

Payson at Orem

I know what you're thinking, Orem. Daniel Hockersmith has that look and Goose Kallunki has that smile. You think this is going to be an easy win. Just because Payson is down this year, you think the Lions are the right team at the right time to stop your region losing streak.

You know what? You're right.

Seth Lovell goes for 20, but Orem's depth proves to be too much.

• Orem 54, Payson 45

Timpanogos at American Fork

I have one of those feelings that usually comes after I polish off the entire bucket of chicken wings at a Super Bowl party or when I'm getting inspiration.

I have a feeling about big Zach. The big fella. Zach Enosa, is about to break out despite Colton Willman's great game.

American Fork 57, Timpanogos 54

Provo at Timpview

I have a problem. Provo assistant coach Jared Casper isn't speaking to me. What can we do to end his silence?

Maybe I could have Jim Spencer call and vouch for me. Maybe Kyson Koop's older brothers would put in a good word for me.

Maybe I could have Domino's deliver.

Am I getting warmer?

How about I predict a Provo win?

Adam Law goes for a season high as the Bulldogs take Round 1.

Provo 48, Timpview 44

Lone Peak at Pleasant Grove

Hopefully the fire marshall is busy tonight and go somewhere else because there will be people packed in the aisles to see Lone Peak's Bracken Funk show you all what he showed me last year -- that he's a stud.

I haven't admitted this to anyone, but it's time you all know. He beat the Zuke in a 3-point contest.

It was lucky for sure, but I've got to give it to him. He's got scoreboard.

He's also got mad skills, just ask Fresno State.

They like him a lot.

Pleasant Grove will be so busy trying to slow down Tyler Haws and Josh Sharp, that the Vikings will be undermanned and unable to stop Funk. My man Craig Tucker will keep the Vikings close.
