Layton Christian had watched a comfortable fourth-quarter lead shrink to just five points in a matter of seconds.
Could American Leadership Academy continue the comeback and finish off the victory?
Layton Christian's Antwain Harvey had the answer.
Ah, that would be no and William Beard added an emphatic heck no.
Harvey scored 18 points, four points in the final minute, and Beard scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to help Layton Christian score a huge Region 14 road win with a 69-56 victory over American Leadership Academy on Wednesday night.
"We played selfish basketball. We had some kids come into the game trying to see how many points they could score and not playing team basketball," said ALA coach Joel Martinez. "We've got to come back against Juab (Friday) and stay together as a team and play organized basketball."
ALA had to play without its starting center Rogelio Castanda, who missed the game with a knee injury and without the 6-foot-7 center, Layton Christian had its way in the key in the fourth quarter and pulled away for the win.
ALA had it going early in the third quarter when it opened its biggest lead of the game at 36-28 lead thanks the to a free throw from David Armendariz, a basket from Jason Ashby, followed by an Ashby 3-pointer, but Layton Christian stormed back to take the lead.
Five points by Micah Shore gave four points from Beard gave Layton Christian a 37-36 lead and a 23-foot 3-pointer by Mike Valdez to end the scoring in the third quarter gave Layton Christian a 43-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Once Layton Christian had the lead, the Eagles wouldn't give it up. Harvey had two of his five steals on the fourth quarter and Beard beat ALA in transition and found space in the paint to help Layton Christian hold on for the win.
Armendariz led ALA with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. He also had seven rebounds. Brady Mower finished with 13 points and Ashby had 11 for ALA, who dropped to 3-2 in region play and 10-4 overall.
