European Union ambassador speaks to Legislature Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Ambassador of the European Union John Bruton spoke to both houses of the Legislature on Thursday about the importance of friendships from across the Pond.

Bruton said the United States and the European Union account for 14 percent of the world's population, but 40 percent of the wealth and an even higher percent of energy consumption.

"That is not a long-term sustainable situation," he said.

The U.S. and E.U. instead need to adopt to change, particularly when it comes to creating peace and taking care of the environment.

He also cited statistics that show 22,000 jobs in Utah are directly supported by EU investment, and that exports to the EU from Utah are greater than China, India, Japan and South Korea combined. But when he comes to the West, "you hear nothing but Asia, Asia, Asia, Asia."
