DeGraffenried brothers team up to beat the Zuke Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Poor Phil DeGaffenried. He just can't win.

Even when he wins, he loses.

Phil had a great first week in the Beat the Zuke contest. He correctly picked Payson's upset over Orem. He knew that Lone Peak would beat Pleasant Grove. He was goooo-d

But his older brother Jimmy was better--as usual.

It's official. Phil DeGraffenried is Jan Brady.

Instead of Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, it's Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.

Phil just can't seem to beat Jimmy at anything.

In last year's Beat the Zuke 3-point shootout for assistant coaches, Phil shot a respectable 16-of-20.

Jimmy made 19-of-20.

Phil played basketball at UVSC when the Wolverines were a junior college. Jimmy played at Weber State and was inducted into the Weber State Athletics Hall of Fame.

When Phil scores 35 points in a city league game, Jimmy scores 40 and of course no one else on the team gets a shot, but that's a different story.

Jimmy was the overall winner in first week of the Beat the Zuke basketball contest.

This sure looks Steve Downey look good.

Downey is the new athletic director for the new Salem Hills High School and was involved in hiring Jimmy as the school's first basketball coach. If he can beat the Zuke, trust me, he'll have no problem turning that program into a winner.

B-Lo's older brother Mark Lopez of Price, finished second to Jimmy. Drew Swainston of Orem was third, followed by K. Clayton of Spanish Fork in fourth and Phil was fifth.

Don't feel too bad for Phil. I've got prizes for the top five contestants each week. If you just read your name is in the paper, you're a winner. E-mail me This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to find out what you've won.

Speaking of prizes, I have an announcement to make. I have scored Utah Flash tickets to give out as prizes to add to our prize pool.

The Utah Flash are the new D-League team that plays in Orem. I've been to several of their games and without question it is the best basketball for the money in Utah.

Now let's get to this week's winners.

American Fork at Pleasant Grove

I'm seeing something. It's a little foggy. It looks like Jeff Schoonover is holding a fantasy football trophy, no wait, it's coming into focus. It's Aces Anderson and he's in the American Fork coaches office eating day old pizza and pointing to a name in the scorebook.

It's Jared Allridge.

Allridge won't lead the team in scoring but those eight points he scores, those will be a killer to American Fork.

Timpanogos at Spanish Fork

Tick, tick, tick. Please clear the building. Zach Clayton is about to blow up. You cannot stop him you can only hope to contain him.

I have to admit Jeff Ritter and Trevor Thomas do make me nervous, but I believe in Clayton. Besides, if he doesn't come through I have a pretty good backup plan.

Matt Gardner.

Springville at Provo

What in the name of Chad Jacobsen is going on in Springville?

First a fantasy football trophy and now is a region title in store for Springville coach Chris Kitchen?

I thought when Preston Eaton left, this team would be in the high school lottery.

Stupid me. But how was I to know Michael Salazar and Brad Kohler would be this good?

I had every intention of picking Springville this week, until I found out not one contestant has picked Springville to win this game. Not one.

Gulp!

Do they have computers in Springville?

Scott Edwards keeps the Bulldogs rolling.

Lehi at Lone Peak

I wasn't going to mention this but sports writer Beky Beaton brought this up after the game and I thought she made a good point. "Hey Zuke. You picked Lone Peak by nine and they won by nine."

In the biggest game of the year, I nailed it and I also called my shot. I said Bracken Funk would be a stud and what happened? Funk scored 21 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

I don't want to talk points this week. Let's talk assists. Let's talk about the table setter. The guy who is so quick he could pitch to himself.

Give me more Kimball Payne!

Mountain View at Tooele

I can read your mind. You are thinking of taking Tooele as your upset special. Tooele has to beat someone don't they?

Since it's only week two of the contest, I thought I would give you a tip.

Don't do it!

Tooele is 0-5 in region play and is 3-11 on the year. Only East has won fewer games than Tooele in all of 4A.

I'd go with Mountain View. If you Wana-maker to the Beat the Zuke championship, you can't afford to miss a single game.

Timpview at Payson

Down, down, down, the DeGraffenrieds are going down. Bye-bye Jimmy. See ya Phil. This game will ensure that you won't win this week.

I hope you enjoyed your one week at the top because Timpview has a little sur-prise for you. Watch and learn while Marcus Hunt shows you how to shoot the 3.
