SALT LAKE CITY -- Gov. Jon Huntsman said he won't rule out financial incentives to preserve Delta Air Lines' hub in Salt Lake City.
Delta has talked to other carriers -- Northwest Airlines and United Airlines -- about a potential merger. If one were to happen, the Salt Lake City International Airport could be in danger of losing its hub status.
Huntsman said the airlines are mostly conducting talks on their own, but if the city's status as a hub appears threatened, he's willing to consider stepping in to sweeten the deal.
"Delta being a hub is extremely critical to our economic viability," Huntsman said at his monthly news conference at KUED public television station Thursday. He said at this point, granting tax breaks appears to be an "extraordinary measure," but he's keeping all options open.
