Free throws in clutch help Payson best T'Birds Print E-mail
Jordan Christiansen - HERALD CORRESPONDENT

Trent Plaisted can't buy one, Shaq's are ugly and Rick Barry's were unique.

But in Payson's Region 7 win over Timpview on Friday night, the Lions' were just plain effective. Payson rode the free throw to glory down the stretch, pulling out the victory over the T'Birds, 75-71, at Payson.

The Lions were 8-for-8 in the final minute of the game at the line, keeping Timpview from overtaking the lead. Payson senior Seth Lovell, 4A's leading scorer who's averaging 21 points a game, hit 10-of-12 by himself on the way to 28 points, five rebounds, two steals and a block.

After Timpview's Bronson Kaufusi hit two free throws to put his team up 66-65 with 1:30 left to play, Payson desperately needed a basket. After a Timpview attempt to steal an entry pass, Payson's Jake Hiatt found himself with the ball under the hoop and put it in, giving the lead to the Lions. The T'Birds turned the ball over on their next possession and Payson's Chad Marvin subsequently converted both ends of the ensuing one-and-one for his first free throw attempts of the night to extend the lead to five, 66-61.

Timpview had a chance to keep the game within reach, but Kaufusi, who finished with 18 points despite shooting 10-for-16 from the foul line, first airballed a free throw, then missed the second, effectively keeping the game firmly out of reach.

"Free throws are crucial," Payson coach Dan Lunt said. "In a game like this, you've got to make them."

Also key for the Lions in the fourth quarter was the play of bench players Jake Hiatt and Chad Marvin. The two senior guards combined for 13 points in the second half, hitting key free throws and 3-pointers when Payson needed them most.

"This was a team win," Lunt said. "We had everybody that came in play their role. They did the job they needed to do. There's different people that have different roles and everyone stepped up and did their role tonight."

Junior Jacob Tipton added 18 points, four rebounds and three blocks in the post for Payson, which moved into a tie with Timpview for second place in Region 7 with a 4-2 record halfway through region play.

Timpview took command of the game in the second quarter behind the 3-ball. The T'Birds hit five treys, including three quick ones from senior Marcus Hunt, to eventually pull out to a 53-44 lead. Hunt scored 17 points in the first half, finishing with 26 on the night, including 11-for-11 from the free throw line.
