In preparation for Wednesday night's game against Arkansas State, Utah Valley State coach Dick Hunsaker gave forward Richard Troyer a present.
It was a Richard Troyer highlight tape.
Troyer pulls up for a jumper.
It's good!
Troyer for 3!
Bingo.
Troyer from the corner.
Yahtzee.
Troyer was on fire. And while he watched himself succeed, his confidence grew and that confidence carried over on the court in the form of a career-high 22 points as Troyer helped UVSC shoot down Arkansas State 72-57 in the McKay Events Center.
"For the last couple of games, I've felt like my shooting was off. Coach gave me a tape he made for me with a bunch of shots I made. I watched it twice. That did it for me. It got my confidence up," Troyer said. "It helped a lot. I think my confidence fluctuates a lot. When I was watching it, I realized I had to quit thinking about it and to just shoot the ball."
Upon further review, it turns out Troyer can score ... and often.
Troyer scored 13 of his 22 points in the first half on 5-of-8 shooting from the field as he helped UVSC build a 40-23 lead at the half. Maybe Troyer wasn't the only one who got a present. The way Ryan Toolson shot against Arkansas State, perhaps he, too, got a tape.
Toolson led the Wolverines with 29 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. In addition to the big scoring performances, Josh Olsen tied a school record with 10 assists and Brett Ravenberg grabbed nine rebounds in 18 minutes of work.
"There were ome truly special plays by Olsen, Troyer and Brett Ravenberg. And again the guy who does so many things every night is Toolson," Hunsaker said. "I thought we battled through a tough start in the second half. I thought our energy to start the game was terrific. Toolson and Troyer hit a lot of shots in the first half and got us spread on the offensive end."
UVSC used Jordan Brady's dunk in opening minute of the first half to take a 42-25 lead, but Arkansas State charged back to cut the lead to five points at 48-43 with 11:30 to play after a Mike Lance basket, but Troyer had the answer. He sank a 3-pointer to extend UVSC's lead to 51-43.
A blocked shot from Olsen and a Toolson jumper pushed the lead back to double digits at 53-43. The Indians shot just well enough to hang around, but not good enough to take the lead. A pair of free throws from P.J. Keaton trimmed the lead to 55-47 with 6:15 to play, but Jabir Jinna buried a 3-pointer and Brady scored on a reverse layup.
Two Olsen free throws pushed the lead to 62-47. After Kewain Grant scored for the Indians, Brady went up through a pair of Arkansas State players and tipped in a missed shot that gave UVSC a 60-47 lead with five minutes left that finished off Arkansas State.
UVSC shot just 33 percent in the second half, but the Wolverines were hot enough in the first half to make up for it.
Toolson scored 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and as a team, UVSC shot 58 percent from the field.
That was nothing compared to the team's 3-point shooting. UVSC made 7-of-9 for 77 percent.
Meanwhile, Arkansas State shot just 31 percent from the field and dug itself a hole too deep to get out of.
The win improved UVSC's record 10-13, while Arkansas State, a member of the Sun Belt Conference, dropped to 9-14 overall. It also finished off a sweep of Arkansas State. UVSC won the first meeting between the two teams, 67-63.
UVSC will now take its four-game winning streak on the road when the Wolverines play at New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday. |
