A former Sanpete County sheriff's deputy has been charged with stealing drugs from an evidence room.
John Earl Stevens, 28, is charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of theft and one count of use or possession of drug paraphernalia. The Utah County Sheriff's Office assisted Sanpete County authorities with the arrest.
The case was filed in Manti, though it will be prosecuted by the Utah County Attorney's Office, according to court documents. Stevens is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in the case on Feb. 27 in Manti.
According to court documents, Stevens, a former K-9 officer and member of the Central Utah Narcotics Task Force, admitted using cocaine and methamphetamine to Sanpete County Sheriff Kevin Holman, and a urine test showed traces of the drugs. A search of Stevens' house by Utah County deputies turned up drug paraphernalia and empty, sealed evidence bags, court documents said.
The documents also said Stevens admitted to Utah County deputies that he stole drugs from an evidence room and from his K-9 narcotics training equipment. As a K-9 officer, Stevens received narcotics for training purposes. Stevens was initially put on administrative leave but was later fired from the Sanpete County Sheriff's Office. |
