The Lone Peak boys basketball team outscored American Fork 33-16 in the second half to earn a 71-41 victory in a hard-fought contest.
Knight Justin Hamilton won the tip and later posted the first points on a feed from Tyler Haws.
The teams dueled even after that for the next four minutes. Clinging to a 10-8 lead, Lone Peak then launched a 12-0 run to significantly pad the advantage.
Hamilton had a pair of putbacks, four boards, a steal and a swat block during this stretch. Bracken Funk also hit the first of three 3-pointers to help push the effort forward.
The Knights took a 23-10 margin into the second quarter and it ballooned to 21 points at the four-minute mark.
However, the Cavemen responded with a 10-2 spurt to finish the half and get the crowd worked up.
American Fork's Jake Murphy was the key to the burst as he scored five points, had a couple of rebounds and made an assist on a trey by Taylor Judd to help his team pull within 38-25 at the break.
That was as close as it got. The Knights scored the first six points of the third quarter and steadily built on the lead until the reserves took over in the fourth period.
Funk led all scorers with 21 points, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and also snagged 10 rebounds.
Hamilton had his second huge game of the week with 15 points, 13 boards, five blocks, two assists and two steals. He was 6-of-8 from the floor.
Haws was also very efficient with 18 points on 7-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 at the line. He added five assists and three steals, the last one finished with a two-handed slam on the breakaway.
Dillon Smith hit three treys in four attempts to keep the defense spread, and Kimball Payne had six points, six assists and just two turnovers.
Murphy led American Fork with 13 points.
"I thought we kept our composure in a physical contest and executed our game plan," said Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis.
"Bracken made some big shots and blew the game wide open," the coach continued. "It was good to see him really show what he can do.
"Justin had another outstanding game," he added. "He's really been playing well the last three weeks."
The Cavemen (1-5, 5-12) will try to bounce back when they visit the Pioneers (0-6, 6-11), while the Knights (6-0, 15-2) will host Spanish Fork (3-3, 11-6). Both games are scheduled for tipoff Wednesday at 7 p.m.
