Lone Peak overwhelms Spanish Fork Print E-mail
Beky Beaton - DAILY HERALD

The Lone Peak boys basketball team used a suffocating defense and a balanced offense to overwhelm Spanish Fork 72-44 in Highland Friday night.

The key stretch came in the third quarter when Don point guard Dallin Naulu, who was held scoreless in the game, was forced to the bench with his third foul.

Over the next five minutes, a 10-point deficit ballooned to 20 as the Knights ran their inside-out game to perfection.

First Tyler Haws kicked out to Kimball Payne for a trey. A bit later, a double relay ended up in Bracken Funk's hands inside for the deuce.

At the other end, Justin Hamilton tipped a rebound out to Josh Sharp, who found Haws for the quick jumper.

Then it was Sharp-to-Funk underneath for another bucket and one. He missed the free throw, but Haws got the board and the putback to make it 50-34 at the end of the third quarter.

The run continued into the final period until Hamilton made a block, then grabbed the ball for a steal. He sent a quick outlet pass to Funk, who forwarded the rock to Haws for his second dunk of the night, starting the procession of reserves into the game.

Spanish Fork hit seven treys in the contest but got just six field goals. They also shot poorly from the line, converting on just 11-of-23 attempts. Shaun Peterson and Zack Clayton led the Dons with 10 points each.

Lone Peak had great balance with 20 points and seven boards from Funk, 17 points and three assists from Haws, 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Sharp and nine points, 10 boards and four blocks from Hamilton.

"Spanish Fork is a good team," said Knight coach Quincy Lewis. "When Naulu got in foul trouble, we were able to extend the lead.

"We really did hustle on defense," he continued. "There was a stretch in the third quarter where they just couldn't get any good looks. Our guys have a lot of respect for their players, so we knew we'd have to work hard.

He added, "We looked a little sluggish in the first half at times, but we really turned it up when we needed to.

"Kimball played really well," Lewis said. "That three he hit in the second half was a big, big shot and sparked our run. Josh had five assists and no turnovers, and Bracken was 10-of-13 from the field."

The Knights (7-0, 16-2) will now turn their focus to the rematch with Pleasant Grove (6-1, 16-2), while the Dons (3-4, 11-7) will try to preserve their playoff position against Lehi (1-6, 7-11). Both games are scheduled for tipoff Friday at 7 p.m.
