Sandy Marvin had to be carried out of the locker room after Thursday night's game.
Less than 48 hours later, she returned to the court with a heavily wrapped ankle, a limp in her step and her 3-point shot.
Her ankle may have had the color of an over-ripe banana, but there was nothing wrong with her shot.
Marvin came off the bench Saturday afternoon to score 16 points -- including four 3-pointers -- to help UVSC coast to an easy 70-52 win over Texas-Pan American.
"I think Sandy's kind of too stubborn to be hurt," said UVSC coach Cathy Nixon. "She had a two-plus sprain. They thought she might have a fracture. She was on crutches yesterday. She was hurting. I told the trainers that it's a good thing it didn't hurt her shot. I thought she really had a good game under the circumstances. She's been in treatment six to eight hours a day. I'm grateful to the trainers getting her back out there. We're not the same team without her."
Marvin scored 12 of her 16 points -- all on four 3-pointers -- in the first half to help UVSC open up a commanding 44-22 lead.
"When I woke up yesterday morning, I couldn't walk on it. We've just been doing a lot of treatment, a lot of therapy. It felt pretty good tonight," Marvin said. "I knew I would be a little slower. I knew my feet wouldn't be there. I just focus on the technique and the basics, the shot and my defense. I knew I just had to slow it down and be smart."
Utah Valley's Robyn Fairbanks got the Wolverines going early. She scored six of UVSC's first eight points to help the Wolverines jump out to an 8-0 lead.
Julie McMurray took it from there. She made a 3-pointer to push the lead to 13-2 with 13:20 left in the half.
After the Lady Broncos cut the lead to 13-8, UVSC responded with a basket inside from Fairbanks and a Jordan Bowen 3-point play.
Fairbanks passed up a 15-foot jumper near the free throw line when she spotted McMurray underneath the basket. She scored on a reverse layup to give the Wolverines a 20-8 lead with 9:38 left in the half.
As a team, UVSC shot 56 percent from the field and 60 percent from the 3-point line. When the Wolverines did miss, Bowen was usually there for the putback. She grabbed eight first-half rebounds.
When Marvin missed a 3-pointer from the corner, Bowen pulled down the rebound, and despite being triple-teamed, scored to give the Wolverines a 32-16 lead with 5:05 left in the half.
Marvin hit three of her four 3-pointers in the final seven minutes of the half to help UVSC open up what proved to be an insurmountable 22-point lead at halftime.
Despite getting 11 points from Tiona Wilson, UTPA never got the lead under double digits in the second half. Fairbanks led the team with 23 points and 12 rebounds. McMurray finished with 17 points and Bowen had seven points to go with 10 rebounds.
"I thought Jordan really did a good job on the boards and defensively. I thought we came out and really shut them down," Nixon said. "Jordan, on both ends of the floor, really set the tone that we were going to be physical. We really dominated the boards in the first half."
UVSC is now 15-7 on the year. The Wolverines will be on the road for their next two games before returning home to end the regular season on March 1 against Cal State Bakersfield.
