Toolson scores career-high 38 as UVSC edges Chicago State Print E-mail
Neil K. Warner - DAILY HERALD

What did Utah Valley State guard Ryan Toolson have in store for his encore?

After 40 inspiring minutes, where Toolson scored 30 points, converted a rare four-point play, connected on back-to-back 3-pointers just 30 seconds apart, Toolson came back out in overtime to the delight of the crowd.

Encore. More!

Get out the lighters.

In overtime, Toolson scored eight points, came up with two steals and hammered home a pair of dunks that finished off an amazing night even by Toolson's standards as the junior guard led UVSC to a 99-89 win.

"I thought Ryan Toolson was sensational. He didn't really have his eye to start the game, but was able to shoot the 3s at the end of regulation," said UVSC coach Dick Hunsaker. "I think 38's going to be a warmup. There's going to be bigger mountains out there. He's a terrific player. He's such a competitive guy who has the will to win."

Toolson finished the night with a career-high 38 points, tying the school's Division I scoring record for a game set by Ronnie Price. He was 11-of-17 from the field, 3-for-5 from the 3-point line and made all 13 free throws he attempted and perhaps most important was he didn't tire. He played all 45 minutes.

"It was a career high at home in front of a lot of fans. That will be something to remember, especially against a team that beat us down there," Toolson said. "It's good to get the revenge also."

UVSC saw its 15-point second-half lead disappear behind the hot hand of mini-me guard David Holston, a 5-foot-6 shooting machine. Holston hit a 3-pointer to give Chicago State a 70-69 lead.

After a Jordan Brady 3-point play, Mike Wilson fired up a 3-pointer to put the Cougars back on top. Christian Wall added to Chicago State's lead with a jumper and Holston followed with a 3-pointer to give Chicago State a 78-72 lead with 3:35 left.

Toolson then went nuts. He sank a 3-pointer and was fouled. Toolson, a 96 percent free throw shooter, knew what to do. He made the free throw to convert the four-point play, then made another 3-pointer. And after a Chicago State miss -- bombs away -- Toolson got loose again. He sank another trey to tie the game at 82 with 55 seconds remaining.

Holston tried to give Chicago State the lead, but missed. Toolson tracked down the rebound, giving UVSC the final shot.

After struggling to get a good look, UVSC got the ball to Josh Olsen in the corner for 3. He missed the shot. UVSC batted the ball up twice towards the basket, but couldn't convert as time ran out in regulation.

UVSC took an 88-86 lead with two minutes left in overtime when Toolson missed a free-throw-line jumper, but Richard Troyer lifted off down the key, timed the rebound and dunked it home.

Toolson then came up with a steal and was fouled. He made both free throws to give Utah Valley a 90-86 lead.

Then if he hadn't already done enough, Toolson stole the ball near the top of the key and raced down court for a dunk that gave the Wolverines a 94-86 lead with 1:23 left. Troyer added two free throws to push the lead to 94-86 at the one-minute mark, but what would the night be without another big play from Toolson? He capped off the win with a dunk to finish off one of his most memorable nights.

"Really, I got my rhythm through all those free throws I was able to shoot," Toolson explained. "Usually the team comes down on me and doubles me, but they were too busy keeping their eyes on Troyer and Brady who all did a very good job, so I got some open shots."

In addition to Toolson's career night, UVSC also got a big night from Troyer, who finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Brady had 18 points and nine rebounds and both Olsen and Kevin Woods finished with 10 points each.

Holston led the Cougars with 22 points and seven assists. He made six 3-pointers.

"That's was a great team. That's a good basketball team. They're athletic and quick. They're fearless. They have no respect for us," Hunsaker said. "They left the court with no respect for us. I told the team at halftime what was going to happen and unfortunately, I was prophetic. They had no respect, they came out and wiped out that lead in six and a half to seven minutes."

The win helped UVSC improve to 12-13 on the year, while Chicago State dropped to 9-16.
